Equipment List
I thought it might be worth posting this (almost definitive) equipment list for attempting Kili, given that quite a few people have asked what they need to take...
Items in green can quite easily be hired from Moshi, but in most cases they are the type of thing you really don't want to borrow, so I would advise having your own. This list is for those people hiking with porters and staying in huts. If you are camping or don't have porters, you will obviously have to carry much more.
- Sturdy rucksack
- Decent sleeping bag
- Cotton balaclavas
- Hiking boots and gaiters
- Mountain socks (i.e., thick ones)
- Thick mountain gloves
- Walking poles
- Rain coat
- Wind cheater
- Hat
- Pocket knife
- Several candles
- Pocket lighter or matches
- Torch with spare batteries
- Small writing pad and pencil
- Sunglasses (else you'll burn your eyes at the summit)
- Sun cream (beware the sun at the summit!)
- Several scarves
- Water repellent for boots
- Lots of pairs of thin socks
- Thin cotton gloves
- A pair of trainers (to relax in after a long day in boots)
- Plenty of sweets, chocolates, glucose tablets etc.
- Personal toiletries
- Several large plastic bags (for multiple uses, some better left unstated)
- Camera, film/memory cards and spare batteries (keep them warm, because you don't want to find your battery frozen just as you reach the summit)
- Small towels
- Wet wipes
- Basic first aid kit
- Some salt
- Some clothes - trousers, T-shirts etc.
- Water bottles or water pouch
- Toilet paper
- Ear plugs
- Some cash for tips etc. US Dollars or Tanzanian Shillings.
