As the Sun Set

There I sat,
Without any cares,
Dreaming of life,
Looking up and away.

I sat on a rock,
Feeling it's warmth,
As the sea all around,
Glimmered with frost.

A little breeze rose,
Swaying my hair,
As I looked at a swan,
Flying high in the air.

My heart filled with joy,
For no reason at all,
As into the distance,
The water went on.

The island in front of me,
Stood steady and firm,
As it gave way for trees,
Growing tall and strong.

Then I stood up,
As the light drained away,
I swayed for a minute,
Since my feet were not strong,
I slowly moved on,
From this land of the gods.

I wrote this poem in a Year 10 English exam (so that would make it some time in 1998!), and I remember that it is based on a photograph that was stuck on the wall of the classroom. I did keep a copy of that photograph, but if only I could find it now...
